We’ve come a long way since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, both in terms of the technology, and how it is being handled in Australian education. One important development in recent months is the release of the Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools. Published at the end of 2023, the Framework aims to provide a responsible and ethical guide for implementing these powerful tools in ways that benefit students, schools, and society as a whole.
GenAI has the potential to support teaching and learning by generating new content across various modalities, including text, images, audio, and video. However, it’s essential to approach this technology thoughtfully and strategically. The Framework is built upon six core principles: teaching and learning, human and social wellbeing, transparency, fairness, accountability, and privacy, security, and safety.
At the heart of the Framework is the recognition that GenAI should enhance and support teaching, administration, and learning, rather than replace teachers or critical thinking skills. It’s vital to engage students in learning about GenAI tools, their limitations, and potential biases, deepening their understanding as they progress through their education. Teachers must be recognized and respected as subject matter experts, pedagogical leaders, and skilled facilitators of student growth.
As we implement GenAI in schools, we must prioritise human rights, wellbeing, and diversity of perspectives. School communities need access to clear information and guidance about these tools, and vendors have a responsibility to ensure users understand the methods and potential biases inherent in GenAI models. Fairness, inclusivity, and equity are paramount, particularly for students with disabilities, diverse backgrounds, and those in regional, rural, and remote communities.
