Presented by The Brainary, in collaboration with and funded by the City of Greater Geelong, this exciting program offers two FREE hands-on workshops for 9 secondary schools across the region.

Designed for Year 9 and 10 students, this citizen science project invites learners to grow local plant species under projected climate conditions for the next 10, 20, and 30 years using the innovative TinyFarm system.

Students will investigate the real impacts of climate change on biodiversity, analyse growth data, and actively contribute to local conservation efforts—all while building critical STEM and environmental knowledge.

How It Works:

Workshop 1

Planting & Climate Investigation

Students begin their journey with a hands-on workshop where they set up experimental plant plots using the TinyFarm system. By simulating future climate conditions (10, 20, and 30 years), students explore:

  • Climate projections
  • Biodiversity loss
  • Ecological resilience
  • Planting local plant species.

Monitoring Phase

(1–2 Months)

Between workshops, students remotely track plant growth through real-time sensor data and timelapse imagery.

This phase builds skills in:

  • Data analysis
  • Observation
  • Scientific inquiry,

as students investigate how changing conditions affect growth and survival.

Workshop 2

Results, Analysis & Conservation

Students reconvene to:

  • Analyse germination,
  • Growth outcomes,
  • Compare results across climate scenarios,
  • Discuss the implications for local ecosystems and conservation.

Healthy plants are transplanted, contributing directly to habitat restoration in the Geelong region.

Enrol your School

Give your students the chance to grow, test, and discover the future of our environment.

This FREE program is limited to 9 secondary schools, so don’t miss out on this powerful, hands-on climate science experience.
